Recently, two countries have started to introduce new national biometric identity cards:

  • Morocco: the new “Carte Nationale d’Identité Electronique” (Identité Numerique) replaces the previous one, now with biometric photographs and NFC.
  • Mexico: the Chamber of Deputies has approved a new “Cédula Única de Identidad Digital” (Unique Digital Identity Card) with biometrics and cryptographic certificates. Moreover, their passports will start being biometric in 2021.

These countries are precisely the ones that have large populations of unbanked with mobile phones that could use their identity cards as an alternative to the traditional banking card (approximately, 18.104.939 for Mexico and 8.553.002 for Morocco).
